Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston’s NINE is a darkly funny, dreamlike musical following film director Guido Contini as he struggles with creative block, his relationships and the many women who have shaped his life.

This production at London College of Music explored Guido’s fractured inner world through an intimate, fluid staging, using theatrical space, ensemble movement and the score to move between memory, fantasy and reality.

The production placed particular focus on the women surrounding Guido, allowing their individual voices and perspectives to remain at the centre of the story rather than simply existing within his world.

Direction

The production stripped back the visual spectacle to put the performers, characters and music at the heart of the storytelling. The staging was fluid and architectural, shifting between Guido's imagination, memories and present-day reality.

The ensemble worked as both characters within Guido's world and a constantly shifting theatrical landscape, creating a production that moved between intimacy, sensuality and heightened theatricality.
