March 2025

Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston’s NINE is a lush, complex musical exploring the artistic crisis of film director Guido Contini as he navigates creative block, personal turmoil, and the many women in his life. Set against a dreamlike Italian backdrop, the show blends fantasy and memory to reveal a portrait of a man unraveling.

This new production at the London College of Music showcased the bold ambition and sophistication of its student ensemble, offering a fresh and emotionally charged interpretation of the Tony Award-winning musical.

Direction

Natasha Haws’s direction focused on clarity, sensuality, and psychological depth—stripping back spectacle to let the characters and score drive the narrative. The staging was intimate and fluid, playing with theatrical space to reflect Guido’s fractured mind.

Creative Approach

  • Minimalist, architectural set design evoked Italian cinema and dreamscape aesthetics

  • A strong emphasis on vocal storytelling and ensemble movement

  • Introspective and character-led, with a focus on female voices shaping Guido’s world.
